A Larger Perspective
We began our movement in my home September 1987 in the suburbs of Baltimore City. Still we remain a modest movement of about seven congregations and growing. It is our goal to expand beyond our existing areas of operation. The vision for our Zion is to expand beyond the United States of America, into Africa and other parts of the world. The global view of Faith Unity Fellowship Ministries Worldwide and Affiliates, Inc., has not been made a reality yet. But it has been our prayer that our witness would transcend our local presence and the shores of the United States into the far reaching areas such as South America, Africa, Europe, Asia and third world countries. The goal is to be faithful to the biblical mandate found in Matthew 28:19 as we make every attempt to make disciples of all nations.
Strategies for Mission and Outreach
"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
These words are part of the "Great Commission" mandated by Jesus Christ and if truly fulfilled by the church, would "disciple" the whole world.
Witnesses for Jesus have spiritual power that can turn the world upside down. Yet, in our world today far too many Christian churches in general and Faith Unity Fellowship Ministries Worldwide and Affiliates, Inc. in particular are as weak, feeble and voiceless as the poor and oppressed that we have been called by God to reach.
How do we reclaim the power to witness to the world? How do we earnestly reach the masses with power? How do we recapture our essential nature and our real purpose for being disciples of Jesus Christ? How does the Christian church compete in a society that is driven by information technology and that is under the control of capitalism, greed and sex?
Beyond a shadow of a doubt there are some who are attempting to build strong congregations and eventually beautiful church edifices. However, the divine question is what good are they if the majority of people in the world are lost, without hope, unhealthy, hungry, homeless, and oppressed? Indeed, the greatest sins of today's Christian are having spirits that are lazy, hearts that are indifferent, and intellects that are dull. The Christian church in our world then is being called to recapture the commission that was declared by Jesus and is evident in every action of God. "I have come that they might have life and have it more abundantly."
One of the greatest tools we have for accomplishing this mission has always been evangelism. However, to me the challenges of the 21st century must be prophetic. Prophetic evangelism begins when the church hears God speak individually and collectively. God talk causes spiritual awakening that compels the church to speak to witness, teach, nurture and heal in the name of Jesus. Just like God spoke clearly to Moses, Isaiah, Jeremiah and Elijah, God speaks today. As these disciples were empowered by God to help change communities, God empowers us to do the same. The difference between them and us is that we want to see the churches mission put into action and see demonstrated the churches statement of faith.
Prophetic evangelism does not merely show the way but it walks with those who are lost and forgotten. Jesus lived in the communities that he served. He walked the streets and listened to the people. He conducted the first successful community needs assessment. A successful community assessment leaves the community equipped and empowered to serve.
Faith Unity Fellowship disciples are called to become prophetic evangelist following in the footsteps of Jesus and its founder whom God chose to go into the world to form churches and to preach to spiritually starved communities, whom God chose personally to birth and lead an army of believers to do the same. It's time for those of you who claim to be followers of Christ in the earth to become prophetic in your witness.
